The day becomes more solemn and serene
When noon is past—there is a harmony
In autumn, and a luster in its sky,
Which through the summer is not heard or seen
For lo! the New-moon winter-bright!
And overspread with phantom light,
(With swimming phantom light o’erspread
But rimmed and circled by a silver thread)
For I must tread on shadowy ground, must sink
Deep—and, aloft ascending, breathe in worlds
to which the heaven of heavens is but a veil.
When, as if its sounds were causing
The charméd ocean’s pausing,
The waves lie still and gleaming,

So haunt thy days and chill thy dreaming nights
That thou wouldst wish thine own heart dry of blood
So in my veins red life might stream again
And thou be conscience-calmed—see here it is—
